New Air Routes to Nairobi in 2025

As we enter 2025, Kenya’s aviation industry is abuzz with exciting developments. Nairobi, the bustling capital and a key gateway to Kenya, is set to witness the launch of several new air routes and additional frequencies. These initiatives promise enhanced connectivity, greater convenience, and fresh passenger travel opportunities. Here’s a closer look at what’s in 2025.
SalamAir Launches Direct Flights from Muscat to Nairobi
SalamAir, Oman’s leading low-cost carrier, has announced its latest African destination: Muscat–Nairobi. Starting February 2025, the airline will offer two weekly direct flights between Muscat and Nairobi. This new service will provide budget-conscious travelers an affordable and convenient option to explore Nairobi’s vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, renowned wildlife, and dynamic economic scene.
The introductory Lite fare for the Nairobi route begins at just $129, which is up to 70% cheaper than fares currently offered by other carriers. SalamAir’s expansion into Africa reflects its commitment to strengthening tourism and trade ties between the Middle East and East Africa, in line with Oman’s vision of enhancing regional connectivity.
Notably, this marks the revival of the Muscat–Nairobi route, previously operated by Oman Air until its suspension in 2020.
Kenya Airways Introduces Nairobi–Gatwick Direct Flights
Kenya Airways (KQ) is expanding its footprint in the United Kingdom by launching direct flights from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to London’s Gatwick Airport (LGW). Commencing on July 2, 2025, this new service will operate three times a week—on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays—with night departures from Nairobi.
This addition will complement KQ’s existing Heathrow service, increasing the total number of weekly flights to London to 10. By offering a second nonstop option into London, Kenya Airways aims to provide passengers with greater flexibility and convenience while enhancing connectivity between Nairobi and the UK.
Airlink Expands Johannesburg–Nairobi Service
Airlink, a leading private airline in Southern Africa, is boosting its Johannesburg–Nairobi route with three additional weekly night flights starting March 30, 2025. This expansion will bring the total frequency to 10 flights per week, offering greater flexibility for both business and leisure travellers.
Having launched this route last year, Airlink has established itself as the first private-sector airline to compete in this market. The new flights underscore the airline’s commitment to meeting growing demand and providing seamless travel options between these two major cities.
Unconfirmed Developments
Air India’s Mumbai–Nairobi Route Air India had planned to launch a new Mumbai–Nairobi service in November 2024, operating three times a week using Vistara’s Airbus A321neo aircraft. However, reservations for the route remain unavailable, indicating that operational details are still being finalized.
Gulf Air’s Bahrain–Nairobi Route Bahrain-based Gulf Air is expected to reintroduce its Bahrain–Nairobi route in late March 2025. The airline plans to operate four weekly flights using Airbus A320/321 aircraft, though further details are yet to be confirmed.
